Refreshed resources

From January the ROOTS resources have a refreshed design and some exciting new features.

Using the lectionary to tell the ‘big story’

We’re approaching the lectionary readings with an aim of supporting discipleship by encouraging the development of biblical literacy. Our hope is to improve people's awareness and understanding of the Bible so that they are empowered to join the conversation about Scripture that has been going on since it was written, and to be able to articulate what they've understood. Wouldn't it be great to help people to take individual responsibility for reading the Bible, so that the Bible is not just something that we hear in church on a Sunday, but something that influences our everyday lives throughout the week?

In Children & Young People

  • More ideas for very young children
  • Expanded and enhanced resources for young people
  • A downloadable Planning Sheet to help you prepare

In Adult & All Age

  • Inspiration for 'an informal talk for all ages' for everyone to hear, before children go into their own groups
  • Exploring the links between the lectionary readings
  • Online support including Pass it on, extracts from the resources to share with your congregation or group.

Following on from our exploration of spiritual styles, all the response activities in both magazines are marked to show which spiritual styles preferences they support.

In both sets of resources we've also gathered all the prayers together for easy reference and selection.

You can see a preview of the new weekly pages in both magazines, so please share these with your networks.

This year, our Advent calendar takes us on a journey, with the Gospel readings for the four Sundays of Advent:

  • through the wilderness (Advent 1), from instructions   to keep awake and learn the lessons of the fig tree

  • through puzzling encounters with John the Baptist (Advent 2 and Advent 3)
  • to the uncompromising 'Yes' of Mary (Advent 4) who really does not know where her journey will lead.

By using our Calendar and our Things to spot, find or hear sheet, we can keep awake and alert during Advent - using everyday things  to help us ponder the Advent messages.
