Training and Support

The team run many training days and courses throughout the year right across the diocese. Here is some information about the courses that are currently running:

Working with Children and Young People

A course designed to serve as both an introduction for those Two children walking through a fieldnew to working with children and young people and as a refresher for those who already have some experience. Available in both taster and ten week formats. The range of topics includes: Child/faith development; Principles and values; Children and youth world context; Discipleship, prayer and spirituality; Contemporary practices and resources; Basic good practice; All age worship and intergenerational; Disabilities and inclusivity; Family ministry; Challenges and joys.

Engaging with the Christenings Project

Christenings provide a wonderful opportunity for engaging with our communities at all levels. This event will look at some of the possibilities for mission and ministry, and what resources might help you and your church in this way. Some of the things that will be covered are: How big is your view of a Christening? Do we focus on the child, the family, the friends, the wider church? How are we connecting with and supporting them before, during and after a Christening? What resources are there to help us?

A person stirring a cup of teaWe also run Thrive events in each area, which are an opportunity to network and pray with others doing similar work in the diocese. These termly gatherings are for anyone involved in work with children, young people or families in a Christian context, whether on a voluntary or employed basis.

Godly Play

Godly Play is a way of exploring Bible stories in a creative, measured and imaginative way. Click here to view our leaflet and view the national Godly Play UK website here. Within the Diocese we have Godly Play Advocates who are able to deliver taster sessions. Godly Play resources can be borrowed from two of our Area Resource Hubs; one in Wakefield Cathedral Education Centre and one to be confirmed – see here for more information on when you can access the Resource Hubs.

You can find all the areas that our Children, Young People and Families Team can help you with in our team booklet here

There are lots of resources available to help support children and young people in discipleship and growing in faith. This booklet brings together some of those the team have identified as being useful. It isn’t an exhaustive list, but gives a starting point. We regularly review resources, so please do email us on childrenyouth [at] if there are others you would like to recommend!

For more information about our courses and events, please visit the Diocesan Digital Learning Platform where you can register your interest for potential courses, access resources, and complete some online training.
