Small church schools are a vital part of our Diocese. They serve their communities with care, build strong relationships and reflect a clear Christian vision in daily life. In many parts of our diocese, they are central to their community identity and belonging.
At the same time, we also recognise that many small schools are navigating increasing challenges, including finance, staffing and changing pupil numbers.
In response, the Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) have developed a published Small Church Schools Strategy to support schools and governing boards.
The strategy is intended to:
- affirm the value and distinctiveness of small church schools
- support early, informed and collaborative decision-making
- encourage planning ahead rather than reacting at a point of crisis
- ensure that decisions are taken with care, clarity and integrity
DBE commitments
- Recognise the value of small church schools and advocate for their contribution
- Support sustainability and early intervention, including clear guidance where risk is emerging
- Strengthen governance and leadership, including support for recruiting foundation governors and governor training
- Encourage collaboration, federation and MAT partnership that preserves distinctiveness
- Consider small schools explicitly within the DBE academy strategy and work with MAT partners on barriers linked to small size
- Respond compassionately where viability ends, including structured guidance, pastoral care and support through closure processes
Sustainability Framework
The strategy includes a Small School Sustainability Framework, which is designed to support governing boards in reviewing their school’s position over time. It helps governors to identify strengths and areas of risk, consider long-term sustainability and plan appropriate mitigation and next steps. We aim for it to be used to support regular, structured discussion as part of the governance cycle.
