Blessing for new MU caravan giving holidays to those in need

A brand new static caravan, owned by the Mothers’ Union, on the east coast at Filey, has been officially blessed and opened by the Bishop of Ripon.

Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley cut the ribbon on the brand new caravan which will provide holidays and much needed respite for those unable to afford holidays.

The new caravan is a replacement for an ageing model and will ensure AFIA holidays will continue well into the future.  Bishop Helen-Ann began the blessing outside on the threshold of the caravan and then gave a short prayer in each room concluding with these words: ‘And now the eternal Spirit, enfold this holiday home with love; indwell this home with joy; and build this home in peace.’

The AFIA holiday scheme offers free accommodation to families in need of a break who could not otherwise afford a holiday.  The scheme is almost entirely funded by Mothers’ Union members in the Diocese of Leeds.

Bishop Helen- AnCutting the ribbonn said "This space is a wonderful place for rest and refreshment and makes the opportunity to get away from it all accessible to those who most need it."

Last year 88 adults and 82 children enjoyed a week ‘Away From It All’ and just one comment from the visitor book shows how much these breaks are appreciated: ‘Having never had a family holiday, this was overdue! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a lovely holiday, filled with love, laughter and a ton of 1st moments.  Our daughter has thrived and loved every minute.’

Bookings are underway for this year’s holidays.

 Practical information

Who can apply?  Anyone who is under financial and emotional stress; who feels they are battling through and just need a break, and meet the listed criteria below. Consideration may be given to a family who have a member with special needs to go to a specialised holiday centre.

What are the Criteria?

•             You have not been on a holiday for at least 3 years. (Discretionary)

•             You couldn't afford to go on a holiday otherwise.

•             You have somebody such as a Vicar, Head Teacher, Social Worker, or a Doctor who will write to us and recommend that you go on a holiday.

How much will it cost?

Mothers' Union normally pays the full cost of the holiday that is taken at a Haven Holiday Park on the East Coast.  Our funds are limited, but we will always help as much as we can. Transport costs are not included and would have to be organised by the individual families. To apply please contact:-
