Churches can go contactless thanks to digital giving project

Digital giving is being expanded across the diocese this summer, thanks to new free contactless giving devices being made available to parishes.

70 contactless devices will be given to churches all across the diocese, as part of a nation-wide roll out supported by the Church of England’s National Giving Team.

In our diocese the project will begin on Monday, July 4, when the application process for churches opens.

Four different types of devices will be available to suit a range of different contexts, including some that will not require an internet connection to work.

Parishes with successful applications will be supported with training on how to set up their device, as well as its ongoing management.

Wakefield Cathedral have been using contactless donation stations for some time, and are encouraging churches to think about how the stations can improve giving.

Zoe Smith, Development Manager at the cathedral, said: "The donation stations have made a huge difference to our giving, especially at a time when people are using less cash.

“They are easy to use and tracking the income is simple."

Janet Edmond, Diocesan Stewardship Officer, said: “I’m excited to be able to lead a project which will support parishes to set up and manage a contactless giving device in their church and help develop their full digital giving potential.

“We live in an increasingly cashless society and therefore I believe it’s now of vital importance that churches use contactless technology providing a new opportunity for people to give generously; helping to sustain their parish’s ministry & mission.”

The devices will be free, but some may incur a financial cost due to fees, depending on what device a church receives.

The application window opens on Monday, July 4, and closes on Wednesday, August 10.

A link to this will be shared on Monday, July 4 through our various social media and communication channels.
