RSCM summer course offers younger singers expert tuition

Young singers are invited to join a Summer Singing Course for eight to 18-year-olds at Rishworth School, near Halifax.

This non-residential course runs from Monday, August 23 to Thursday, August 28, and is being organised by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). The RSCM is an educational charity whose mission is to ‘promote the study, practice and improvement of music in Christian worship.’ Applications are anticipated to be open until the end of July.

Four days of rehearsals, worship and workshops led by enthusiastic and experienced choral directors have been planned in order to enable young people to lift their voices together in song. Rehearsals will be interwoven with specially designed skills sessions which aim to develop wider musicianship and help singers fulfil their potential.

Alex Berry, Chair of the newly-formed RSCM Leeds Area Team and Organist and Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral said “RSCM courses are great for young singers because they offer an opportunity to meet and sing with other young people who love music, to work with and learn from top-class professional musicians, and to enjoy singing some great music.”

Revd Pete Gunstone, Leeds Diocesan Representative to the RSCM and Curate at Fountains Church Bradford said, “This course is perfect for young singers who have some prior experience of singing in church.

"I highly recommend this course because such immersive musical experiences were significant in my development not just as a young musician, but as a young Christian, and as a young person in general.," said Pete, pictured at Fountains.

The RSCM Leeds Area team is in the process of developing plans to support music and musicians across the Diocese.
