Seven new members were admitted into the Mothers' Union for the Diocese of Leeds on Saturday 19th January at Ripon Cathedral.
During a special service lead by the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds (pictured below), trustees and officers of the Mothers' Union were commissioned to serve for the next three years. The Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, Bishop of Ripon and one of the new members of the Mother's Union, also delivered an address which encouraged all to “Listen, observe and act in step with God”- the worldwide theme for Mothers’ Union in 2019. The service was also attended by June Houghton, the new Mothers’ Union President for the Province of York.
The Dean of Ripon, John Dobson, expressed his pleasure at the service being held at Ripon Cathedral and quoted from the Diocese of Leeds Mothers’ Union Vision Statement which emphasises through the love of God, that the Mothers' Union wants to work in partnership with the Church to support stable family relationships and promote a more just society.
Jean Thurman, Mothers' Union President for the Diocese of Leeds (pictured above and right) said, "The Mothers' Union in the Diocese is at an interesting and exciting stage."
During our first three years, we have established a way of working in the five Episcopal Areas. We approach the next three years as a time for building on the foundations, engaging existing members and encouraging new people including members of clergy to support us in prayer and action both across the world and around the corner."
