Churches across the diocese will have the chance to access national net zero funding by completing the Energy Footprint Tool (EFT).
The Church of England’s EFT uses gas, electricity and other fuel bills covering January–December 2025, as well as basic details about church buildings, to build a clearer picture of carbon use and helps all act more strategically.
Completing the EFT shapes how national net zero funding is allocated, and it is now an essential step for parishes to access funding.
By filling in the EFT a church can also make wise, targeted decisions to reduce their carbon footprint, and it can help highlight where energy is wasted and may help reduce energy costs.
The Rt Revd Anna Eltringham, Bishop of Ripon and Lead Bishop for the environment in our diocese, said: “Completing the Energy Footprinting Tool is an important act of caring for God’s people and creation by a church.
“By measuring and reducing energy use, churches can show care for creation as a central act of faith, stewardship, and discipleship.
“Churches can lead by example, ensuring their energy footprint reflects stewardship, reverence, and hope for a sustainable future.
“Filling in the EFT also helps churches access national funding for key works, and I strongly would encourage all churches to complete it.”
It takes less than an hour to complete the EFT, and anyone with access to a church’s energy bills can complete it.
