Children read Mark's gospel to celebrate translation of Bible into English

Children from Hawes Primary School in Upper Wensleydale in the Ripon area commemorated the 500th anniversary of William Tyndale printing the Bible into English by reading Mark's gospel together in St Margaret's Hawes.

On Tuesday, July 7 people gathered at the church to hear the young people read the whole of Mark’s gospel read without interruption.

The gospel was divided into 50 sections by the Revd Dave Clark, Vicar of Upper Wensleydale, and the children were all allocated different parts to practice.

As one was reading, the next waited in the wings ready to take over so the process was almost seamless.

Some members of the church family were involved as well, and juice and fresh fruit was provided for the children to keep them going.

Revd Dave said: “The children have used it as a point of discovery in their RE, English & History lessons and were all very pleased to have taken part and to have heard Mark's account of Jesus' life and ministry without interruption.”

Elizabeth Foxwell, class teacher, said: "Thank you for involving the children, it was something a bit special for them to be part of - and for me too!"
