Kairos Church in Harrogate becomes Diocese of Leeds’ first indefinite BMO

Kairos Network Church in the Ripon area are celebrating becoming the Diocese of Leeds’ first indefinite Bishop's Mission Order.

Kairos operates as a network of small communities scattered around the Harrogate Deanery, who also gather regularly at a central base in the town.

Emerging from a dwindling parish church with building challenges over 15 years ago, Kairos has grown as a creative response with a call to mission across the area.

Some of the different communities run activities like Messy Church, a bike recycling project, or outdoor worship in the local Pinewoods, whilst others share life in cafes, community centres and homes seeking to be disciples of Jesus and missionaries within their everyday contexts such as work, school, neighbourhoods and interest groups.

These kinds of worshipping communities are licensed by a Bishop’s Mission Order which has previously been re-licensed every five years.

At the start of May, following a review conducted by the Ven David Bailey, the Rt Revd Toby Howarth, Acting Bishop of Leeds, granted Kairos an indefinite BMO.

The Revd Ben Askew, Pioneer Minister of Kairos, said: “We are delighted for this recognition that Kairos has grown into a sustainable and long-term mission focused church, and that it is seen as a permanent part of the church in Harrogate.”

The Rt Revd Anna Eltringham, Bishop of Ripon said: “Kairos’ transition to ‘indefinite’ BMO status, which I believe is only the second in the country, is testament to the hopeful vision, strong leadership and missional reach which has strengthened over time and provides a sure foundation for the future.

“We look forward to seeing what new things God might do through this alternative way of being church across the Harrogate Deanery.”
