A new diocesan gathering has created space for listening, reflection, and shared learning among people from UK Minority Ethnic (UKME) and Global Majority Heritage communities.
Some 18 participants came together at Huddersfield Parish Church to share their experiences of church life, faith, and calling.
The event, the first of its kind in the diocese, focused on exploring vocations and identifying both opportunities and barriers to ministry.
The day was supported by the diocese’s ongoing commitment to racial justice and inclusion, with the Revd Wayne Simmonds, Diocesan Racial Justice Officer, present to help encourage open conversation and ensure that the voices and experiences of UKME and Global Majority Heritage participants were heard and valued.
Through open discussion, a range of important questions were raised, including how to discern God’s calling, how the Church supports and mentors individuals from diverse backgrounds, and what practical steps are needed to build confidence and greater participation.
Themes of belonging, accessibility, representation, and authenticity emerged strongly.
Participants reflected on how worship, language, and community life can better reflect and serve the diversity of the Church.
There was a shared recognition that this work is at an early stage, alongside a clear commitment to continue developing support for UKME and Global Majority Heritage vocations.
The Revd Canon Sean Robertshaw, Diocesan Director of Vocations, said: “This was a brand-new opportunity at which we began to listen to each other’s stories and to understand some of the issues that present specifically for people from UKME and Global Heritage communities.
“We look forward to meeting again in the future and continuing this important conversation.”
The gathering concluded with Holy Eucharist, presided over by the Rt Revd Smitha Prasadam, Bishop of Huddersfield, who reminded those present of the importance of remaining rooted in God as the source of all calling.
Plans are already underway to hold a further event later this year.
