Salt and Light festival shares joys of northern rural ministry

First published on: 11th April 2024

A new festival of faith and hope for rural mission in the north will be taking place soon.

Salt and Light aims to be an opportunity for those leading and working in the church to gather and explore the opportunities and joys of northern rural contexts.

Partnering with dioceses including Leeds, Carlisle, Durham, Newcastle and York, Salt and Light will be the beginning of a pattern of sharing and learning for the church in the rural north.

Keynote speakers and workshops will help explore the historical, spiritual, and socio-economic lenses to help understand the contexts of northern rural ministry.

Speakers include Frances Ward, author, theologian and former Dean of St Edmundsbury; Michelle Brown, cultural historian and author of one of the History Today books of 2023, Bede and the Theory of Everything; Patrick Laurie, hill farmer, blogger and author of Native: Life on a Vanishing Landscape which was shortlisted for the “Wainwright Prize for UK Nature Writing”; and Sally Shortall, Duke of Northumberland Chair of Rural Economy at Newcastle University.

Salt and Light is taking place on Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15 at the Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre, Hexham, Northumberland.
