Biography

Following university and ministry in northern Pakistan with CMS, Malcolm trained at Wycliffe Hall in Oxford and was ordained Deacon in 1996 and Priest in 1997 in Lichfield Cathedral. He served his title in Walsall in the Diocese of Lichfield, before moving to the Diocese of Liverpool in 1999 as an Associate University Chaplain and Associate Minister in a parish, where he planted a new student congregation. 

In 2002 Malcolm was appointed as Anglican Chaplain to the University of Liverpool, and to a pioneering role planting a new worshipping community for young adults in a Liverpool city centre nightclub. From 2008, he served as Priest-in-Charge and later Rector of St Mary’s Wavertree. He also served as Area Dean of Toxteth and Wavertree.

In 2014 Malcolm was appointed as Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham in the Diocese of Sheffield. He is a member of the College of Archbishops’ Evangelists, and has served on the Church of England’s General Synod and Mission and Public Affairs Council. He is deeply committed to evangelism, inclusion and social justice, and to supporting all followers of Jesus to grow confidence in sharing their faith in both word and action. Malcolm was ordained and consecrated as the Bishop of Wakefield in June 2025.

Malcolm is married to Jo, and they have two children in their early twenties. He collects vinyl records and enjoys going to festivals, concerts and gigs, encompassing a wide range of musical genres. Having grown up in Leicester, he is a life-long supporter of Leicester City Football Club, and he enjoys watching pretty much any sport that involves a ball, regardless of shape and size!
