Art in the Dale exhibition opens its doors at Kirkby Malham

First published on: 3rd July 2023

Art in the Dale, the annual exhibition by Malhamdale artists, has now opened at St Michael the Archangel, Kirkby Malham.

The 15th century parish church, known by locals as The Cathedral of the Dales, will host the work of 12 professional artists who live locally until Sunday, July 9 and includes painting, etching, collage, feltwork, stained glass, photography, wrought iron, and a light installation.

The exhibition, launched with a jazz band, also features the work of Malham Art Group, the pupils of Kirkby Malham Primary School, and local poets. Admission is free, with donations invited to support church funds, many of the pieces are for sale, and commissions can be taken.

Revd Sue McWhinney, Associate Priest for Kirkby Malham said “I am so pleased to see this church filled with art, the fruit of local artists who are inspired by the landscape, complemented this year by poetry, as well as music. A strong theme running through the exhibition is a sense of connection with place, and with eachother. Do come and visit!”

Art in the Dale is open from 9am to 6pm every day (opening at 11am on Sundays), and there are some special events to which everyone is invited.

  • Tuesday 4th July: Octameron in concert, 7pm, light music for a summer’s evening, tickets £10 on the door.
  • Saturday 8th July: Poetry and Storytelling evening with Katherine Langrish (author and folklorist) and local poets. Free admission, donations invited.
  • Sunday 9th July: Choral Evensong with the Choir of St Alkelda’s, 4pm. The choir will be singing pieces by Tallis, Ayleward, Dyson, and Franck.
