A surprise celebration has taken place for staff at Meeting Point, a charity based at Christ Church, Upper Armley working with refugees and asylum seekers from across Leeds.

The afternoon, taking place on Monday, July 11, included thanks from local councillors, Steve Appleton (the chair of the charity) and Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West. The event included a photomontage of the work of Meeting Point over the past two years and of course lots of cake.

Commenting on the day, Emma Crossley, the director of Meeting Points, said, “It is an honour and a privilege to work with Meeting Point and alongside such a fantastic team.

“We may be a small charity but I like to think we make a big difference and to have that celebrated in such a day was extremely memorable.

“I cannot thank everyone involved enough, not only for putting on such a special occasion, but for working together in such challenging times over the past few years. Long may the project continue!”

Over the course of the pandemic Meeting Point has remained open, and continued to adapt. Early on the charity offerred a delivery service and then operated as a food bank, gradually increasing the services offered.

Around 100 families are helped each week with food, essential items, advice and emotional support. Next year Meeting Point will have operated for 20 years at Christ Church.

Revd Phil Arnold, vicar at Christ Church, said, “Meeting Point is a great example of what empowering a diverse group of people to work together can do to change lives. Well done to Meeting Point!”
