Women's Community Iftar shows light overcomes fear

At a recent Women’s Community Iftar hosted and led by Kaneez Khan MBE of Wellsprings Together, the message was clear: when women come together in faith, solidarity, and hope, light will always overcome fear.

As the community came together for the second time, they reflected on how to establish traditions that foster safe, welcoming spaces where women from diverse faiths, cultures, and communities can come together in friendship, understanding, and shared purpose.

The Revd Jenny Ramsden, Interfaith Adviser for the Diocese of Leeds and a trustee of Wellsprings Together, opened the event with a reflection on the significance of Lent and Ramadan falling almost side by side this year, highlighting the shared spiritual practices of fasting, prayer, and giving to those in need.

Tracey Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, was also present and spoke about the importance of standing alongside every community during challenging times.

Adeeba Malik CBE, the Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, highlighted the strength, leadership, and resilience of women in their communities.

Siaa-Lianne Mathurin, Chief Officer of Wellsprings Together, said, “For many of us, it was also a joy to reconnect with women we deeply respect and admire: community leaders, professionals and friends who continue to serve our city with dedication and care.

“The evening was a powerful reminder that when women gather in spaces of dignity and understanding, something transformative happens.

“Stories are shared, friendships grow, and communities become stronger.

“At the same time, the event reflected the difficult times we are living through.

“Yet even in uncertain times, the message of the evening remained clear: when women come together in faith, solidarity and hope, light will always overcome fear.

“Wellsprings Together extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, supported and helped create such a welcoming and spirit-filled evening.”
