First Responsibility

We offer an annual programme to support clergy beginning a first incumbency or a post of similar responsibility in the Leeds diocese. The cohort is usually a mixture of those who have been curates in the Leeds diocese and those who are new to the diocese. It is great both to continue working with those we know well and we look forward to getting to know those who have moved here from elsewhere.

The course begins and ends with short residentials (see the programme for 2018-19 below). Unlike the curates’ IME programme you are not required to attend this, but we hope that you will want to do so and that you will find it relevant and helpful. Apart from anything else it is good simply to meet with others who are at the same stage as you for mutual support and encouragement. The cost of the course and your travel to these sessions will be paid for by the diocese.

In addition to this diocesan programme you will be asked to attend a LYCiG course (Leading Your Church into Growth) and a Presence and Engagement course (and if you are ministering in a rural context you may also be asked to attend some training from the Arthur Rank Centre).

First responsibility course 2018-2019

Session 1: 19th – 20th November 2018 (mini-residential)
(starting at 11am on 19th and finishing around 4pm on 20th)
At Community of the Resurrection, Mirfield (Stocks Bank Road Mirfield, West Yorkshire WF14 0BN)
In this session we will be looking at:
•    initial impressions (yours of your new parish and how the parish will be seeing you)
•    the stages and process of transition
•    ministerial wisdom in the first year in a new post
This session will be helpful even if you have not yet started in your new post – a chance to step aside from the busyness of wherever you are and reflect on the significant change involved in this move and new role.

Session 2: Monday 4th February 2019
10am – 3.30pm
At the diocesan office (Church House, 17-19 York Place, Leeds, LS1 2EX)
This will be a practical day, meeting members of the DAC and learning about faculty applications, looking at good practice with PCCs and preparing for the APCM which will be coming up shortly.

Session 3: Tuesday 26th March 2019
10am – 3pm
At St. Peter’s, Gildersome (170 Church St, Gildersome, Leeds LS27 7AF)
In this session we will spend some time with the Registrar, Peter Foskett, looking at legalities – come with your questions about marriages, churchyards etc.! We will also be thinking about effective time management.

Session 4:  24th – 25th June 2019 (mini-residential)
(lunch to lunch inclusive)
at The Briery (38, Victoria Avenue, Ilkley, LS29 9BW)
We will be thinking about planning, setting goals, looking after yourself, and how to sustain ministry for the long haul.
