Dean of St John’s Cathedral Hong Kong visits the diocese

The Very Revd KK Chan, Dean of St John’s Cathedral in Hong Kong has enjoyed a wide-ranging visit to the Diocese of Leeds.
Dean KK was in the UK as part of a trip organised by the Friends of the Church in China. For the first leg of his time in the UK, Dean KK was hosted by Revd Dave Ho Young (Team Rector of Moor Allerton and Shadwell) who had been welcomed by Dean KK to St John’s Cathedral when he had visited Hong Kong on sabbatical in 2023.
While in our diocese, Dean KK visited all three diocesan cathedrals as part of a two-week tour of English cathedrals, which included York Minster, Christ Church Cathedral Oxford, Birmingham Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral.
Dean KK visited Bradford Cathedral to meet with Dean Andy Bowerman and contributed to the tapestry being woven at the cathedral.
He met with Bishop Arun Arora while he was in Leeds (seen here below with Revd Bex Davidson, the newly ordained curate in Moor Allerton and Shadwell), visited Leeds Minster, St Barnabas’ Alwoodley, and met with Diocesan Secretary Jonathan Wood while he had a tour of the diocesan office.
In Wakefield, Dean KK met with Dean Simon Cowling during his final week as Dean of Wakefield, and also attended Choral Evensong where he met Bishop Nick Baines. On his final day in the diocese, Dean KK visited Ripon Cathedral where he was taken on a tour of the cathedral by Dean John Dobson and had lunch with Dean John and volunteers from the cathedral’s education team following a schools service.
Revd Dave Ho Young, who organised Dean KK’s visit to the diocese, said: “After visiting St John’s Cathedral in Hong Kong a few years ago, it has been a pleasure to reconnect with Dean KK Chan and it has been a joy to welcome him to our diocese.
“ It was wonderful for me to experience and to hear something of St John’s Cathedral’s ministry while I was in Hong Kong, and I know that Dean KK has very much enjoyed being in the Diocese of Leeds and getting to know our deans.
“We look forward to a deepening relationship with our fellow Anglicans in Hong Kong.’
St John’s Cathedral Hong Kong was built in 1849 and is one of the oldest Anglican cathedrals in East Asia. Its services in English, Mandarin and Filipino on Sundays are always full and it has a significant ministry with migrant workers in the territory. KK Chan became Dean of St John’s in 2021.
