New diocesan Net Zero Church Buildings Officer to support churches

The Diocese of Leeds has been pleased to recently welcome Alasdair Hicks, our new Net Zero Church Buildings Officer, who will be working with churches to help make their buildings more efficient and supporting them in reaching their Net Zero Carbon emissions targets.

Alasdair has extensive project management experience, after a career in developing and implementing construction projects on the railway.

He has been concerned about sustainability for many years, and sits on the Board of a Community Land Trust that facilitates construction of permanently affordable housing built to One Planet Principles where he lives in York.

He was also the community representative on the Environment and Sustainability Group at York Minster.

Alasdair is married to Rachel and has two adult children, and they can regularly be heard in church choirs around the country.

He himself plays guitar, with more enthusiasm than skill, in a community big band.

Alasdair said: “I’m looking forward to working with churches across the diocese to help them take steps to improve their energy efficiency and to lower their carbon footprint.”

To help support parishes across the diocese more effectively, Alasdair and the wider Church Buildings Team were recently visited by Adrian Fox, Environmental Sustainability Officer from the Church of England, for a unique and valuable training opportunity.

The group visited Leeds Minster and Holy Trinity Boar Lane with Adrian to learn more about the challenges and opportunities of reaching Carbon Net Zero by 2030.

Lisa McIntyre, DAC Secretary and Church Buildings and Pastoral Reorganisation Team Leader, said: “We thank Adrian for giving up his time so generously – sharing his expertise and running us through many facets of how we can help our churches reduce the carbon emissions of their buildings.”
