New Honorary Canons installed at Ripon Cathedral

First published on: 2nd February 2022

Two new Honorary Canons have been recently installed at Ripon Cathedral, as the cathedral celebrates more than 1300 years of ministry.

The Revd Canon Hayley Matthews, Director of Lay Training for the diocese, was made Honorary Canon, while Matthew Ambler, Chair of the House of Laity in the Diocese of Leeds’ Synod, was made Honorary Lay Canon.

The Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, joined the celebrations at the cathedral.

Statutes provide for a variety of canons to be appointed to work with the Dean to enable the cathedral to fulfil its calling as a centre for mission for the Diocese of Leeds, together with its partner cathedrals, Wakefield and Bradford.

About his installation Matthew said: "It is an honour to be installed as an Honorary Lay Canon of Ripon Cathedral during this its 1,350th Anniversary Year.

“This role will see me serving as an ambassador for the Cathedral within the Diocese, and the opportunity to work as part of the College of Canons - across our three co-Cathedrals in Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield - with both clergy and lay colleagues to further our common mission in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ across our Diocese."
