Archbishop eats, meets and speaks during Wakefield day out

An award-winning school, a Bishop’s breakfast and the Sisters of Horbury all featured in a recent visit to the Wakefield Area by the Archbishop of York.

The Most Revd John Sentamu began his day as a guest at Bishop Tony Robinson’s monthly breakfast meeting for Wakefield’s business and community leaders.

He joined some 60 of them at Wakefield Cathedral Kitchen and also met catering staff who look after guests at the well-attended morning forums.

Archbishop Sentamu is also pictured with leading Wakefield businessman, Sir Rodney Walker.

From there, he went to the town’s Cathedral Academy, which won Secondary School of the Year at the national Times Educational Supplement Schools Awards 2019.

The awards recognise outstanding contributions made by education teams and individuals to help students around the country to succeed, both inside and outside the classroom.

The motto of Cathedral Academy in Wakefield is “greatness is within” – and judges said its pupils certainly have shown that to be the case.

Archbishop Sentamu is pictured meeting some of its student ambassadors as he enjoyed a tour of the school.

He then went to meet the Sisters of Horbury, including Sister Robina, pictured far right, the order's last Mother Superior.

Back at Wakefield Cathedral, the Archbishop  spoke on the subject of prayer at Follow Me, one of five sessions hosted by Bishop Tony (pictured) for lay people in the Wakefield Area to encourage them in their discipleship.

The sessions start with Choral Evensong at 6.30pm, followed by a simple supper, talks and discussions.

About the visit, Bishop Tony said: “The Archbishop of York spent a very varied day in the Wakefield Area speaking at the monthly Bishop’s Breakfast to 60 people from different sectors of the community; the bulk of the day with staff and students at Cathedral Academy, tea with the Sisters of the Community of St Peter, Horbury and leading a session of Follow Me in Wakefield Cathedral to 180 people on ‘When you Pray… Yes’.

"Everyone was uplifted and encouraged by meeting the Archbishop.”
