Bishop Nick has been awarded the Chartered Institute of Linguists’ David Crystal Trophy for his work in championing the power of language.

The award is given to individuals who have made “an outstanding contribution to the field of languages throughout their life and career. They may not be a linguist themselves, but languages will have been a constant within their work and life and they will have used their knowledge to help or inspire others”.

Previous winners have been Bridget Kendall MBE, Susie Dent and Frank Gardner OBE.

The award was presented by CIOL’s Royal Patron HRH Prince Michael of Kent. Bishop Nick said, “This is a huge surprise and I feel a bit of a fraud, to be honest, but I feel very honoured”.

Bernardette Holmes MBE, Chair of CIOL Awards Committee, said, “It is so well deserved.

“I and many others have found you to be an inspiration.

“You have been a champion for languages for so long, starting out your career as a linguist and using your language skills and cultural knowledge actively in your ministry in the church, especially in your work with the Meissen Commission.”
