Palm Sunday marked across diocese

First published on: 11th April 2022

Donkeys have led processions and palm leaves have been waved, as Palm Sunday has been marked across the diocese.

The Bishop of Ripon, the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, took part in a procession to the church in Hubberholme, led by a fibreglass donkey from the Fox and Hounds pub in Buckden, sourced by intrepid Rector the Revd Tom Lusty.

Bishop Helen-Ann said: “A junior member of the pilgrim group named the donkey ‘Mason’ and off we went!

“A beautiful day in Upper Wharfedale for our walk, accompanied by musicians and singers and the local community bus for those who preferred a smoother journey (the bus temporarily bearing the number ‘Hosanna’), we made our way along the path by the river Wharfe, stopping at a farm en route for prayers and hymns.

“Different people took it in turn to carry ‘Mason’ and we arrived at the church in Hubberholme where 75 of us gathered to begin our Holy Week journey.

“A wonderful example of our rural churches at the heart of their communities.”

Processions took place across the diocese, including in Bilton, Bingley, Hemsworth, Huddersfield, Ripon, Wakefield and Leeds.

Pictures from them can be found below.
