Refugee support charity marks 20 years of supporting asylum seekers

First published on: 25th May 2023

Meeting Point, the charity based at Christ Church, Upper Armley, is celebrating 20 years of helping refugees and asylum seekers in the Leeds area.

Meeting Point provides practical and emotional support to the many people who arrive in Leeds from around the world seeking sanctuary.

Numbers attending the project have increased significantly over the years, as conflicts around the world continue to force families and individuals to flee to places of safety.

In 2022, Meeting Point had 4897 visits to its weekly drop-in by 561 individuals - reflection of increasing need, but a fantastic achievement for such a small, front line charity.

Earlier this month, the community came together to celebrate, with live music from Bandiera Rossa and a DJ, circus skills, bouncy castle and craft, along with lots of food from around the world.

Emma Crossley, who leads the Meeting Point team said: “What a wonderful and well-deserved celebration event!

“To see the community come together in such a way was really quite remarkable, and a true reflection of what can be achieved when people from all walks of life come together and unite behind a common cause.”

Revd Phil Arnold added: “Meeting Point is a brilliant charity that brings so much to those who often feel alone. It is a wonderful example of how volunteers, many who have been refugees themselves, can make a difference”
