Sharing Christian faith with the students of Leeds

First published on: 24th March 2022

Students in Leeds are encountering the Christian faith through a newly planted student congregation.

Church at Hyde Park Corner, run from St Augustine’s Wrangthorn in the heart of the Leeds student area, was launched in September 2021 after a Church of England grant was gifted.

Months after its launch, Church at Hyde Park Corner now hosts a regular Sunday afternoon service, along with events designed to connect and reach out to students in the local area. This has included a recent Easter meal and discussion, pancake handout and carol service.

On Tuesday lunchtimes members of the church head out to Woodhouse Moor to bless passers-by with free coffee and treats.

Church at Hyde Park Corner also employs two members of staff to support their operations and social media presence.

Cameron MacGregor, Assistant Operations Manager, said, “Church at Hyde Park Corner is a church for unchurched students.

“We’re looking to build a community that discusses faith and life in the modern world, together and openly as we explore what it means to apply Christianity to the student world.

“Over the past few months, we’ve seen really good growth. Around 10 or 15 come on a Sunday to our services, joining with us to talk about faith.

“We’ve been doing loads of outreach events and we’ve seen some 60 students on average at each of those.

“As we move into the future St Augustine’s Wrangthorn is having significant building works done to completely repurpose the building and make it an area reading for the community. We’re really excited to see how God uses this for Church at Hyde Park Corner and to see us connect with the student community around us.”
